Minutes with Mary

The Day They Found Something Unexpected

What begins as another search for bottles leads Mary and Evelyn to something they never expected to find.
Two young girls standing near a ball field as they gently approach a small brown stray dog.

Mary and Evelyn rode their bicycles out toward the ball fields, their baskets ready, their eyes scanning the ground for the familiar shape of empty bottles.

The sun was warm, the air still, and the wide open space felt full of possibility.

They had done this many times before.

But this time was different.

Near the edge of the field, something moved.

At first, Mary thought it might be the wind shifting through the grass. But then she saw it again—a small shape, low to the ground, watching them carefully.

They slowed their bikes.

And then they saw him.

A small brown dog, thin and quiet, standing just far enough away to keep his distance. His eyes followed them, uncertain but curious.

Mary stepped forward slowly.

“It’s alright,” she said softly.

The dog didn’t run.

Instead, he took a cautious step closer.

And then another.

In that moment, something shifted.

They hadn’t found a bottle.
They hadn’t found something to collect.

They had found something that needed them.

Mary knelt down, holding out her hand. The dog hesitated, then moved forward just enough to meet it.

And just like that, without any plan at all, something new had entered her life.
