Minutes with Mary

What a Bottle Cap Can Hold

Mary sat quietly on the floor, with her bottle caps spread out in neat rows in front of her.
Mary sitting on the floor studying her bottle cap collection, reflecting on memories tied to each one.

At first, they had just been something to gather—bright bits of metal left behind, easy to pick up, easy to keep.

But now, as she looked more closely, she began to notice something she hadn’t seen before.

Each cap seemed to carry a memory.

One reminded her of a warm afternoon with her father, sitting on the porch and sharing a soda. Another brought back the sound of laughter as she and her friends rested their bicycles along the curb.

Some came from days she could remember clearly… others from moments that felt softer now, like something just out of reach.

Mary touched one cap gently, then another.

They weren’t just objects anymore.

They were small pieces of time—tiny markers of where she had been, who she had been with, and how those moments had felt.

She realized then that collecting wasn’t only about gathering things.

Sometimes, it was a way of holding onto something that might otherwise slip quietly away.
